Last year’s event was a smashing success, and this year is again shaping up to be a truly memorable weekend for all who attend. “Rendezvous is the largest gathering of mega-yachts for charity in the world, all to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County,” said Brian Quail, President/CEO. “To date, the event has raised more than $30 million for our organization and the more than 12,500 at-risk youth it serves.”
On Fisher Island, the weekend kicks off Thursday, November 9 with a VIP Welcome Reception and Friday, November 10, guests enjoy the Pirates of Fisher Island themed “Dine Around the Docks” Yacht Hop event, where the lifestyle of the rich and famous is truly emulated. Guests dressed in chic yachting attire are treated to the ‘good life’ as yacht owners and captains do their best to out-do one another and truly impress their newly boarded guests, followed by special entertainment sponsored by South Florida Auto Auction of Ft. Saturday, November 11 features activities during the daytime with Boys & Girls Clubs members followed by an invitation-only cocktail party at the five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami on Brickell Key presented by Ulysse Nardin for Admirals, a generous group of individuals who contribute $50,000 annually to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. The “Under the Sea” Formal Gala is the grand finale of the weekend, featuring a live performance by American pop singer, songwriter, dancer and Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Alumnus Jason Derulo. Long before he recorded his hit single “Whatcha Say,” long before becoming a judge on So You Think You Can Dance and long before appearing on the cover of Billboard Magazine, Jason Derulo had recorded his first CD — thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. A member of the Marti Huizenga Club in Hollywood for several years, Derulo performed at the 2000 Rendezvous after winning a talent show and appeared on stage with singer Michael Bolton. “I think I sang ‘I Believe I Can Fly,” he said, adding that he still has that recording. Since then, Derulo has sold more than 50 million singles and achieved international stardom. He credits his Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County experience as playing an important role in his success. “That place was instrumental in helping me become who I am today,” he says. “It teaches you the basic skills you need to be a grown-up.”
For Derulo those skills included discipline and enhancing a competitive spirit, both of which he says have been critical to his achievements as an entertainer. At the same time, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County also gave him an opportunity to just be a kid in a secure and encouraging environment. “I remember being so excited to get there after school every day,” he said. “It was something to look forward to — a sanctuary that was safe.” First introduced to the Club by an older cousin, Derulo says the activities he saw during his initial visit were what drew him in. It was there that he had the chance to play basketball and ping-pong in a nurturing environment and it was there that he learned to play pool. “The Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County is like any child’s dream because you’re having the time of your life,” he said. “There is something there for you, whatever your interests are.”
Born in South Florida, Derulo has achieved eleven Platinum singles, including “Wiggle”, “Talk Dirty”, “In my Head” and “Whatcha Say” and just released a new single “Swalla” with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. Derulo has been on TV shows such as Dancing with the Stars and celebrity judge with Paula Abdul on So You Think You Can DanceEmpire and more. Derulo has won CMT Music Awards, BMI Pop Music Awards and Teen Choice Awards plus nominated for several Awards such as the MTV Music Video Awards and American Music Awards.
The gala will also feature the induction of Mr. & Mrs. Terry Taylor along with Lawrence F. De George into the Dream Makers Society. Dream Makers inductees are individuals who have established a long-term commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County for at least 10 years, have played a vital role in the development of a program or event that has had a significant impact on the success of the organization, and have personally contributed funds in excess of one million dollars.
